Student growth measures and assessments are a key tool for today’s educators. Along with content knowledge and classroom management skills, 21st-century teachers are expected to know how to understand and implement assessment of student skills.
Assessment Literacy and Teachers
In most states, assessment literacy is an absolute must. State guidelines expect teachers to meet specific assessment standards as a part of regular professional practice. W. James Popham calls assessment literacy a “sine qua non for today’s competent educator.”1
Training for educators is part of effective assessment literacy. No one is born knowing how to administer these assessments or understand the resulting metrics. Teachers must be able to:
- Understand and apply assessment terms and procedures in a classroom environment
- Act ethically when collecting assessment data points and managing the resulting information
- Communicate findings and resultant educational strategies/decisions to parents, students, and school administration
- Select appropriate assessments for individual situations and needs.
Assessment Literacy and Student Success
Assessment literacy is important for teachers—but it’s even more vital for students. A deeper understanding of student performance is a key component of effective teaching, and practical student growth measures can help educators achieve that understanding. The better you understand where your students are and how they’re growing, the more effectively you can guide them as they learn.
Assessing alone isn’t enough. Assessment literate teachers are those who know how to use assessment as a teaching tool to improve learning for their students. Teachers need to interpret data and make useful teaching modifications based on assessment results for assessment practices to be worthwhile. From assessment development and design to results-based instructional strategy, educators must understand the importance of proper assessment for student advancement.
