Recently, we have had some teachers ask us about incorporating portions of our The Common Core: Clarifying Expectations for Teachers & Students books into their classrooms, materials, and resources, but concerned about using too much and falling on the wrong side of fair use (yes, it's Wikipedia, but it's a good jumping off point). We want to make it clear that we welcome and encourage innovative, transformative, and daily use of the books, Achievement Rings, and other resources we have developed.
One of the challenges of fair use is that the lines aren't always clearly delineated; a great tool for self-assessing and documenting your process is the Fair Use Evaluator. They also have a very helpful explanation of some of the relevant issues and terminology. (In the Learn More About section, they have some broken links, but the Back / Next buttons work fine.)
If you find our books so helpful that you want to incorporate them more robustly into your work – in a pacing guide, or digital app, for example – we offer licensing solutions, feel free to send us an email or call our office.
There have been a very few isolated incidents where our entire books were copied and pirated, without even any acknowledgement of our authorship. In these cases, we were obligated to defend our copyright in order to protect our content, and because pirating copyrighted material isn't fair to anyone. I want to assure you that we wish legal action were never necessary and we are happy to work with districts to make sure the necessity never arises .Again, if you have questions, please feel free to contact us – if you have used the Fair Use Evaluator to assess your use, you can include that as well.
One final note – the Common Core State Standards Initiative has its own license, governing the use of the standards.
