Formative Assessment

An ever-evolving process that provides students with feedback during the course of instruction.

Formative assessment is finding out, during the learning process, where a student is on their journey toward mastery.

While summative assessment can be seen as an event, formative assessment is an ever-evolving process that provides students with feedback during the course of instruction. Good feedback engages students to consciously plan next steps toward meeting that learning target. Effective teachers provide time for students to interact with feedback and make a plan for improvement, either written or consciously, in their minds. Effective feedback encourages student motivation, growth, and independent thinking.

Formative Assessment Teacher Journey Snapshot

Every day, I post learning targets in every subject for the kids, so they know exactly what we are learning for that day. We focus for a moment on what the goal is for the day, reflect, and make connections to past learning. These goals are not just for kids… they are for me too! It keeps me from going off the road and reminds me to make connections for the students. The school day does not allow for wasted minutes. The learning targets remind me of where we are going and how I can help kids close the gap!
