Common Core English Language Arts:

Overview: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) provide educators with a new vision for student achievement. This training introduces the organization of the Common Core and prepares educators to use the standards in their classrooms.

Learning Targets: I can...

  • identify the major shifts in the Common Core when compared to current state standards
  • describe ways in which both the "what" and "how" of instruction change as a result of implementing the Common Core.
  • explain the structure of the Common Core.
  • use the CCSS flip books to support clear and cohesive common core instruction.

Participants will use The Common Core: Clarifying Expectations for Teachers and Students, by Align, Assess, Achieve (priced separately, per participant) to:

  • Examine the structure and content of the Common Core State Standards.
  • Develop and strengthen strategies to integrate CCSS into the classroom using:
    • Enduring Understandings
    • Essential Questions
    • Learning Targets
    • Formative and Summative Assessment
    • Student Involvement
    • Effective Feedback Strategies

Common Core State Standards Mathematics:

Overview: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) provide educators across the nation with a new vision for student achievement. This training introduces the organization of the Common Core and prepares educators to use the standards in their classrooms.

Our expert trainers will work with attendees on deep mathematics content (K-12) and process through the lens of the Common Core State Standards. They will use the mathematical practices and rich tasks at each grade level to help teachers deeply understand the standards.

Learning Targets: I can...

  • discuss how I will use the mathematical practices to support instruction aligned to Common Core mathematics standards in my classroom. (What they will "look like" in my classroom? How they will help students learn?)
  • describe components of a CCSS math classroom. (What a classroom looks like, feels like, sounds like)
  • describe ways in which both the "what" and "how" of instruction will change as a result of the Common Core.
  • describe the relationship among enduring understandings, essential questions and learning targets.

Participants will use The Common Core: Clarifying Expectations for Teachers and Students, a resource by Align, Assess, Achieve (priced separately, per participant) to:

  • Examine the structure and content of the Common Core State Standards.
  • Develop and strengthen strategies to integrate CCSS into the classroom using:

Common Core Literacy Strategies in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects:

Overview: This workshop will provide a framework for improving literacy skills, with a focus on reading and writing (CCSS standards), in the grades 6-12 content classroom. Participants will draw from best practices research, as well as consider components from Common Core State Standards to develop an understanding of how to integrate sound literacy practices, such as reading, writing, and speaking, with content curricular standards to improve student motivation and achievement. Participants will leave with over ten new strategies and activities for immediate use in their classrooms.

  • Identify the major shifts in the Common Core when compared to current State Standards.
  • Describe ways in which both the "what" and "how" of instruction will change as a result of the Common Core.
  • Implement deep reading and writing strategies to support Common Core learning in the content area.
